As Mukesh Ambani walked up to the podium for what seemed like the umpteenth time in the last 6 months, the nation waited breathlessly to see if the freebies that Jio had been providing will extend for more time.
As most conferences do, things kicked off with the numbers. In 170 days, Reliance had added 100 million customers which averages out at 7 customers per second. They also claimed employment for over 60,000 Indians as part of the Jio family. Jio users on average had made about 200 crore calls and consumed nearly 100 crore GB of data, which put India in the number one spot when it comes to mobile data usage, this means that Indians consumed more data than the entirety of United States and about 50 percent of the total population of China. Jio also boasted that they have double the number of 4G base stations than their competitors and they expect to cover 99 percent of India’s population by the end of 2017.
Reliance also announced Tariff plans which will come into effect on April 1st of this year. Mukesh Ambani stated that the Tariffs will be aggressive and Jio will actively monitor the highest selling Tariff plans across its competitors and offer 20 percent more data at the same price.
Jio also announced something special for its existing subscribers, known as the Jio Prime Membership programme. The registration fee for Prime membership is a one-time payment of Rs 99 and users can continue reaping the benefits of the unlimited offer by paying Rs 303 per month till March 31st, 2018. That is effectively just Rs 10 per day. Prime members will also get access to the full bouquet of Jio’s media services worth Rs 10,000 for one full year until 31st March 2018.
